athenahealth Customers List

athenahealth is a Boston healthcare technology company that has served ambulatory practices since 1997. Its athenaOne platform combines an electronic health record, medical billing and practice management, and patient engagement, and it is used by independent and specialty practices, medical groups, community health centers and health system clinics.

Because athenaOne runs the front desk and the billing office as well as the exam room, knowing which companies use athenahealth helps practice management, revenue cycle, patient engagement and other healthcare vendors see where their offer may fit, and who in the practice is likely to own the decision.

HCPContacts helps you identify companies using athenahealth and connect with their practice administrators and their operations, finance, IT and executive decision-makers.

The company

What Is athenahealth?

athenahealth is a privately held company that builds technology for ambulatory care: the practices, medical groups and clinics where most patient visits happen outside the hospital.

Where hospital EHR vendors sell mainly to health system IT departments, athenahealth's customers are more often run by a practice administrator or a physician owner. Its platform covers the clinical record together with scheduling, billing and patient communication, and athenahealth prices athenaOne as a percentage of a practice's collections.

It serves practices of every size, from start-ups and small independent practices to large medical groups, community health centers and the outpatient practices of health systems.

The platform

What Is athenaOne?

athenaOne is athenahealth's flagship platform. It brings three jobs that many practices once bought separately into one system, and adds AI tools and optional services on top.

  1. Electronic health record

Clinical documentation, orders, results and care coordination, with specialty-specific content.

  2. Medical billing and practice management

Scheduling, registration, claims and collections on the same platform as the record.

  3. Patient engagement

The patient portal and the athenaPatient app for messages, check-in, results and payments.

The chain runs athenahealth → athenaOne → the practice. Practices do not all use the same combination: optional services such as authorization management, coding and advisory support are added practice by practice.

More than an EHR

athenahealth EHR and Practice Management

A hospital EHR list mostly tells you about clinical systems. An athenahealth list tells you about the whole practice: the same platform books the appointment, documents the visit, sends the claim and collects the payment.

That is why the athenahealth installed base matters to more than EHR vendors. Billing companies, coding services, patient engagement tools and practice management add-ons all work alongside athenaOne, and the people who choose them are usually in operations and finance rather than IT.

You may also meet older module names. Before athenaOne, the same functions were sold under separate names, which still appear in older case studies and job descriptions.

What Is an athenahealth Customers List?

An athenahealth customers list names the practices and companies that run athenahealth and gives you business contacts for the people who manage them. A directory of practice names tells you where to look; this tells you who to talk to.

Who uses it

Companies Using athenahealth

athenahealth's customers are mostly outside the hospital: medical practices, physician groups and health centers, from single-location offices to multi-state networks. These are the types athenahealth itself says it serves.

  • Small independent practicesOne or a few locations, often physician-owned. athenahealth has a dedicated small-practice offering.
  • Medium and large medical groupsMulti-site and multispecialty groups such as Tryon Medical Partners, with 300 physicians.
  • Specialty practicesOrthopedics, urology, ob-gyn, pediatrics, pain management and many more single-specialty groups.
  • Community health centers and FQHCsFederally qualified health centers such as Tapestry 360 Health and Mountain Laurel Medical Center.
  • Behavioral health providersOutpatient mental health practices. athenahealth reports a 2026 Best in KLAS ranking for ambulatory behavioral health.
  • Urgent careWalk-in and urgent care clinics, sometimes alongside primary care, as at TrustCare Health.
  • Physician enablement networksOrganizations that support many independent groups on one platform, such as Privia Health.
  • Health systemsThe ambulatory and physician practices of health systems, such as Holzer Health System.

Market context

athenahealth's Presence in U.S. Healthcare

athenahealth reports its reach in clinicians, patients and claims, not in practices, and the federal figure counts clinicians too. None of these is a count of practices, and none is HCPContacts data.

How to Read athenahealth's Market Share

Acute care hospital market share, the usual yardstick for Epic, Oracle Health and MEDITECH, does not describe athenahealth, whose customers are mainly practices. The closest public measure is clinician-level. In 2024, 7.8% of the 268,652 clinicians reporting in Medicare's Promoting Interoperability program used athenahealth certified health IT, compared with 62.8% for Epic, 10.5% for Oracle Health, 4.2% for NextGen Healthcare and 4.0% for eClinicalWorks.

That figure counts clinicians, not practices, and a clinician can report more than one developer, so the percentages add up to more than 100%. It includes only clinicians in that program, so it is not a full ambulatory market share.

Decision-makers

Decision-Makers at Companies Using athenahealth

Practices are run differently from hospitals. Administration, operations and billing leaders usually matter more than an IT department, and enterprise titles appear mainly in larger groups and health systems.

    Small practice

One location, a handful of clinicians. One or two people run the business side.

    Start with

    • Practice Manager

How Businesses Can Use an athenahealth Customers List

What changes when you know a practice runs athenaOne. It does not make a practice a buyer, and results depend on your offer.

  • Account-based marketingGroup practices by specialty and size on one known platform, and reference the athenaOne workflows they already use.
  • Healthcare IT salesIn smaller practices the buyer is usually the practice administrator, not an IT department. The list names the person who actually decides.
  • Practice management solutionsathenaOne already covers scheduling and billing, so add-on tools need to complement it. Knowing the platform shows what the practice has.
  • Revenue cycle and billing servicesBilling runs inside athenaOne, so billing and coding offers are evaluated against it. Reach the revenue cycle or billing lead directly.
  • Patient engagement technologyathenaOne practices already have a patient portal and app, so position engagement tools as additions rather than replacements.
  • Integration and interoperabilityathenahealth runs a Marketplace of 590+ partners and publishes APIs. Knowing a practice is on athenaOne tells you which integration route applies.
  • Cybersecurityathenahealth runs the platform, but practices still manage their own devices, networks and user access. Reach the IT or administrative lead who owns them.
  • Healthcare consultingGroups adding sites, specialties or new ownership may need operational or billing advice. No current project is assumed.
  • Data, analytics and medical technologyReach finance and clinical leaders at specialty groups, such as orthopedic or cardiology practices, with the EHR context in hand.
